“Your neighbour told you she didn’t want your six-month-old daughter at the dinner party. Nothing personal, she just couldn’t stand her crying. Your husband said it would be fine. After all, you only live next door. You’ll have the baby monitor and you’ll take turns to go back every half-hour. Your daughter was sleeping when you checked on her last. But now, as you race up the stairs in your deathly quiet house, your worst fears are realized. She’s gone. You’ve never had to call the police before. But now they’re in your home, and who know what they’ll find there…”
I LOVED this book. It lives up to it’s title of ‘The most talked about thriller of the year’, it was impossible to put down with a gripping story with twists you’ll never see coming. The book is so easy to get into due to how fast paced and shocking it truely is. The characters all have depth to them which in turn also makes them more relatable and characters you can get behind.
The story starts with husband and wife, Marco and Anne, next door at their neighbours, Cynthia and Graham’s, party. Anne and Marco have a six month old daughter called Cora who they had to leave next door, much to Anne’s protest, because Cynthia didn’t want the child crying at her party as she hates children. We then learn from Anne’s perspective of how ‘beautiful’ Cynthia is and how Anne thinks she’s flirting with her husband Marco, Anne is jealous of Cynthia. The whole time whoever Anne is constantly worrying about her child. It is when Marco and Anne head home do they find their front door ajar and Cora has disappeared from her crib.
As the book progresses we begin to learn everyone has their own secrets to hide and for good reason. Obviously I won’t spoil but damn they’re good and dark. The ending of the book even after getting the typical ‘case closed’ kind of wrap up is still incredible. The last page of the book just left an amazing lasting impression.
I couldn’t recommend the book enough to any mystery/suspense book fans. A real edge of the seat feel throughout the whole book
Would I read it again? Hell yes
