“I don’t remember how I ended up in the icy water but I do know this: it wasn’t an accident. They say you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but sometimes it’s hard to tell them apart. My friends love me. I know they do. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t try to kill me.”
One of the best YA novels I’ve ever read. YA isn’t really my book genre but a friend of mine recommended this to me and I am so glad she did. I was hooked.
The book begins with a girl in the water, dead. An early morning dog walker discovers the body in the cold river in the Winter months of the year. Frantically he pulls the girl out of the water and calls for emergency services. For 13 minutes the girl lay dead as the paramedics used the defibrillator on her eventually getting a pulse. The second chapter is then just texts messages sent back and forth between two girls that we learn to be the other girl’s “best friends”. This text message exchange is very odd and suspicious leading the reader in further.
The girl in the river we find out to be called Natasha or ‘Tash’ for short. She’s in hospital with no memory of the event or how she ended up in the river. She is visited by her best friends and also her cliché ‘old best friend from when she was younger but grew apart however the friend is still salty over it’. I’m trying hard to not spoil anything here but some evidence comes to light suggesting Natasha’s best friends called Hayley and Jenny have something to do with the incident and so Natasha armed with her new old best friend Becca try to prove it.
However things aren’t that simple as the person you didn’t expect to have any involvement actually has the most involvement. And you will NEVER guess who that person is. The book had me completely hooked from beginning to end and in places it is very shocking. I can’t say much more than that without giving away major plot points other than you just have to read it.
Would I read it again? Definitely.
The book took me 2 days to read in total.
My Rating: 5/5 Stars
